Antidepressants don’t work

Filed under: Health Information — admin @ 7:05 pm

Antidepressants don’t work
Antidepressants are usually given to people who face severe depression. This depression leads to a chain of other complaints. Hence, this is subsided by giving antidepressants. These are the medications that are given to cure people from their stage of depression. There are adequate medicines today as antidepressants namely Prozac is commonly used. However, many headlines state that Prozac as well as the other antidepressants are inactive pills. They do not find it effective in curing the depressed patients. The scientists stated that the results of the antidepressant medications are effective to few, but the severely depressed patients do not find the antidepressants effective unless they do not approach for alternative treatments. The researchers submitted for approval of the antidepressant drugs namely Venlacaxine (Effexor), Fluoxetine (Prozac), Paroxetine (Seroxat) and Nefazodone (Serzone) to the US Food and Drug administration. They agree that the antidepressants shown an overall decrease in the symptoms of depression in comparison to placebo. However, these improvements are not found to be very meaningful, but for the patients facing severe depression. This research was not taken on the basis of trials and further studies were done and they did not state that antidepressants do not work and show no effect. However, it does exhibit that the drugs differ from one level to another and the symptom also vary. Doctors comprehend the severity and recommend antidepressants as the right option. The professors and researchers have come to a conclusion that antidepressants don’t work alone and it has to be associated with appropriate diet as well as exercise. Physical exercise, self help books and various other forms of relaxation in association with the antidepressant drug helps in reducing the seriousness of depression. On the whole, antidepressants also exhibit improved symptoms than the placebo. This was statistically significant. Though, doctors prescribe antidepressants, many are not convinced. This is because they expect immediate relief and any antidepressant takes at least a week to show some effect. Moreover, all the antidepressants are sure to show some side effects. The moment the side effects are more, patients try to stop it and start declaring that the antidepressant do not work. Antidepressants work only when they are taken in continuity as per the prescription. You should not increase or decrease the course of medicine at your own convenience. You should not also stop it abruptly as your body cannot take it. You should reduce it gradually so that the antidepressants do not exhibit side effects. There are many antidepressants available in the market, yet without proper consultation, it is not recommended to avail these medications.

Bipolar disorder

Filed under: Health Information — admin @ 6:30 am

Bipolar disorder
Under normal circumstances people experience different moods which depend on several factors in the person’s life. However these changing moods also reach a state of balance and normalcy in some time, without ever reaching abnormal levels, be it happiness or sadness. In those with Bipolar disorder, mood swings are extreme, swinging from one end of the mood spectrum to the other end. Apart from the mood changes being extreme, the moods also continue for prolonged periods of time such that the person’s personal, professional and social functioning is affected and there is severe psychological distress. Also referred to as Manic-Depression or Manic Depressive disorder, Bipolar disorder is characterised by the individual swinging between mania and depression. Mania is an extreme form of happiness characterised by a feeling of euphoria, hyper-activity, cheerful optimism about life, an inflated sense of self-esteem and confidence etc. In its severe form, Mania may also include psychotic symptoms like delusions and hallucinations. When a person with Bipolar disorder is in a manic state, there is often a decreased need for sleep, rapid speech, racing thoughts (often the speed of the thoughts is so fast that speech cannot keep up), lack of concentration, poor judgment and increase in risk taking behaviour along with impulsivity. The polar opposite of mania is depression. This includes typical behaviours including extreme lethargy, negativity towards life, low or absent self esteem and a feeling of worthlessness. There is also increased tiredness even though the individual may be sleeping more than normal, reduced appetite, lack of interest in meeting people, increased irritability and short temper etc. Additionally, depression leads to feelings that life is not worth living and severe depression is often linked with suicidal ideations and psychotic symptoms. Bipolar disorder is difficult to diagnose and the final diagnosis is done using the Diagnosis and Statistical Manual – IV- TR which is published by the American Psychiatrist Association. To aid in diagnosis, there are subtypes of Bipolar disorder – Bipolar disorder I, II, Cyclothymia and Bipolar disorder NOS (Not Otherwise Specified). For Bipolar I, the individual has experienced one or more manic episodes or mixed episodes (mania and depression together). A depressive episode is not required for this diagnosis but it generally occurs. Bipolar II includes hypomanic episodes and at least one major depressive episode. The individual should not have had any manic episodes. With Cyclothymia the individual has a history of hypomania and depression which dos not meet criteria for major depression. When none of the symptoms presented meet any of the above criteria, it is called Bipolar disorder Not Otherwise Specified.
